WordNet? What's that?
A modest proposal
A WordNet is a collection of assertions about some set of noun, verb, adjective, and adverb lexemes (including collocations) in a language, each assertion identifying:
- two or more lexemes as synonyms or
- a verbal statement (gloss) of the meaning shared by a set of synonyms or
- a phrase containing a word derived from a lexeme
- two adjective or adverb lexemes as antonyms or
- two sets of adjective synonyms as similar in meaning
- a set of noun synonyms as a special case (hyponym), component, member, or ingredient of another set of noun synonyms or
- a set of noun synonyms to which a set of adjective synonyms pertains or
- a set of noun synonyms expressing an attribute of which a set of adjective synonyms expresses a value or
- a categorial, regional, or usage domain to which a set of synonyms belongs or
- a syntactic attachment restriction to which an adjective lexeme is subject or
- a syntactic frame in which a verb lexeme can appear or
- two lexemes as derivationally related or
- one set of synonyms as entailing another,
and a collection of programs for the management and use of those assertions.
